Google Launches $1 Million Indie Games Fund for African Developers

Google Play has announced the launch of its first-ever $1 million Indie Games Fund for Africa, a major initiative aimed at supporting the growth of independent game development studios across the continent.

The fund is designed to empower innovative African developers by providing financial support, mentorship, and technical resources that will help them create world-class games while showcasing authentic African stories to a global audience.

Funding Details

Google will distribute the $1 million fund among 10 outstanding independent game studios, with each selected studio receiving between $50,000 and $200,000 in equity-free funding. This means successful applicants will retain full ownership of their businesses without giving up any equity.

In addition to financial support, selected studios will benefit from:

Expert mentorship from experienced professionals in the gaming industry.
Technical assistance to improve game quality, performance, and visibility on Google Play.
Business guidance to help studios scale their operations and reach international markets.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify for the Google Play Indie Games Fund for Africa, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Be a privately owned and independent game development studio.
Have no more than 50 employees.
Have previously launched at least one game on mobile, PC, or console.
Be officially registered in one of the 32 eligible African countries, including Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, and Uganda.
Agree to publish supported games on Google Play and participate in the Google Play Pass program on a non-exclusive basis for two years.

Applications are currently open through Google's official Africa Indie Games Fund portal.
